FELINHELI RECYCLING SCHEME AN EXAMPLE FOR OTHER AREAS SAYS ALUN FFRED

26/09/2012

Arfon AM Alun Ffred Jones has congratulated volunteers who run a community recycling scheme in Felinheli, which he believes could inspire similar ventures in other areas.

During the first month of its existence Felin Gylchu has received enthusiastic support in the area. The volunteers, led by chair Rhiannon Jones, have been opening a shop for three days every week in an especially renovated room in the church hall in the centre of the village. They sell clothes, books and other items that have been collected locally, donating the profit to various causes in the area. Half the income goes towards renovating the historic Llanfair Is-gaer church on the outskirts of the village, with the rest shared between organisations that include the local football club. Some items are given to charities such as Antur Waunfawr, the Red Cross and RNLI for selling or recycling. Future plans include a food bank that would supply items of food to the Council social services department for distributing among the needy.

After visiting the venture with local County Councillor Sian Gwenllian, Alun Ffred Jones said:

“I would like to congratulate the women who were responsible for setting up this venture. They are doing a big favour to the area by providing a recycling service, raising money for worthy causes and strengthening the community spirit. I would love to see similar schemes being set up in other towns and villages.”
